GoDaddy Suffers Data Breach

Domain registrar and web-hosting company GoDaddy has notified some of 19 million customers of a data breach.

Data breach incident happened in October 2019, but was only detected on April 23, 2020 when GoDaddy flagged some suspicious activity.

Impact of GoDaddy data breach

As a result of the episode, the web account credentials of an unknown number of customers have been compromised.

The impact of the data breach could be far-reaching since GoDaddy is the world's largest domain registrar, managing approx. 77 million domains.

The breach was confirmed in an email filed with the State of California Department of Justice and sent out to customers by GoDaddy VP of engineering Demetrius Comes. According to Comes, an unauthorized individual accessed login information used by customers to connect to SSH (secure shell) on their hosting account.

In the message to affected clients, GoDaddy refers to the known impact as minor, but investigation is ongoing at this time.

According to the letter:

"We have no evidence that any files were added or modified on your account… The unauthorised individual has been blocked from our systems, and we continue to investigate potential impact across our environment."

GoDaddy stated it acted promptly to minimize the impact of the security incident and that GoDaddy proactively reset login information to help avoid more harm. They also recommend you to audit your hosting account and update access credentials.

GoDaddy assured that "main GoDaddy.com customer account, and the information stored within your customer account, was not accessible by this threat actor."
